Before we discuss the latest cameras from Canon let's jump back to 2015 when not one but TWO rebels were announced the T6i and the T6s- Canon has for many years offered a rebel along with a very base model like the T5 or t6 but this was the first time we had a release of two extremely similar cameras. The difference was slight the T6s offering a top LCD and a rear dial. Canon has done the same again but changed the naming convention - the T7i is logically the successor to the T6i and the 77D is the successor to the T6s. Canon will continue to offer the earlier models for now making their line of cameras sitting below the XXD models quite large with a T5, T6, Sl1, T5i, T6i, T6s, and now the T7i,77D That's quite a confusing lineup. Let's talk about these new cameras - The big headline feature in my opinion is DUAL PIXEL AF is in both the T7i and 77D marking the first time we have dual pixel in a Rebel camera. Dual pixel AF is that smooth and accurate live view focusing system that makes using AF during videos easy and it makes it easier to use live view for photography with fast and accurate autofocus.
What else is new - Improved low light AF performance, on par with the 80D, 45 cross-type AF points (also on par with 80D), Digic 7 processors which should provide slightly better low light/high ISO performance, Low Energy Bluetooth connectivity for always on connection. Video time lapse movie mode and 1080p at 60fps- still no 4k, a new battery providing noticeably better battery life over the T6s & T6i models. And this is all in a slightly smaller, slightly lighter body vs those earlier models. Because they have made the t7i smaller I don’t think we will see a Canon Sl2. They want you to buy this or the new M6 mirrorless camera if you want a small camera.
Like the T6i and T6s models the main difference between the T7i and the 77D is the body with the 77D offering a top LCD and a rear dial that in my opinion makes manual control of the camera easier. And like the T6i vs T6s dilemma if you are trying to decide T7i vs the 77D - I would recommend the 77D for its easier manual control - after all - aren't you buying these cameras to be able to more easily shoot in manual? I hope so- so spend a little more and make it easier. The 77D looks like it will have a slightly better buffer for RAW shooting as well but I haven’t confirmed this yet.
Now my early thoughts on the 80D vs the 77D - This is a tougher decision. The real strengths of the 80D – bigger battery providing almost 1,000 shots per charge, weather sealing and a significantly faster top shutter speed at 1/8000 of a second, 100% pentaprism viewfinder along with a headphone jack make this a more professionally capable camera for photographers and videographers. If you are a casual photographer the 77D offers savings and a camera the will provide more than enough power for you but If you plan to become more serious about your photography or videography the 80D offers just that much more room to grow that I do recommend purchasing.
And then there is the mirrorless M6 - has canon finally gotten serious about their mirrorless cameras? I have a post up at Photorec.tv with more info and I will be back with a video soon.
Which of these cameras are you most excited about - or are you waiting for that Canon 6D Mark II? Let me know in the comments -
