Canon 800D vs Canon 200D - Canon T7i vs SL2
Hey whats up everyone, my names Chris Winter and in this video I’m going to go over some of the key differences and similarities between the brand new Canon SL2 and the Canon T7i so hopefully I can help you choose which one will be best for you.
—————————————————————
Now the Canon 800D can shoot at 6 frames per second, compared to 5 on the Canon 200D. Both of these are actually very respectable for cameras under $1000 as many others are still shooting at just 3 frames per second. Just for comparisons sake this is what 6 frames per second sounds like on the T7i … and this is what it sounds like on the SL2. Now as you can tell the difference isn't huge and for most people, 5 or 6 frames per second is going to be more than enough. If you do shot a lot of sports though, having that extra shot might be important for you.

To me though one of the bgigest reasons why you'd be looking at the Canon SL2 other than the price of course, is it's size … it's tiny. The 200D is one of the smallest DSLR's on the market in fact and I've found is amazing for travel and day to day shooting. The 800D is also a pretty small camera in fact, especially when you pair it up with a camera like the 70D or 80D. In terms of weight, the SL2 is about 79 grams lighter for the body itself. So if you are really looking for the smallest traditional style DSLR, the 200D will really be the one for you.
—————————————————————
If we turn the cameras to the back here, you'll notice that they both look relatively similar. And that inclues these fully articulating screens. Essentially these allow you to completely flip the screen up and down and even to the front and back which is great if you want to film yourself. Overall theres not a huge diference between the two, so both are great.
—————————————————————
And speaking abotu htose screens, both the 800D and the SL2 have touch screens. Now if you're coming from a smart phone you'll really appreciate this as it allows you to easily change your settings or your focus point by simply touching on the screen. And that's where I really love them. On both the 200D and the T7i all you need to do is simply tap the screen very lightly and wherever you touch will smoothly and cinematically come into focus, it's great.
—————————————————————
Let's talk quickly about the battery life on both of these cameras now and interestingly enough, I actually found that the Canon SL2 had slightly better results. Now if you watched my full review of the 200D you'll know that I wasn't super impressed with it's battery life in video mode, but it's not bad in stills mode. Overall I was probably getting about 680 shots on the Canon SL2 and on the 800D I was probabyl getting about 650, so both should perform pretty well.
—————————————————————
Let's talk about Autofocus in stills mode now and this is where the 200D is pretty impressive. The Canon SL2 has 9 autofocus points with one being cross type which for a beginner is generally going to be mroe than enough. But on the other hand the Canon T7i has 45 autofocus points.More importantly thoguh these are all cross type autofocus points which I found delivered very acurate and snappy performance. Again for sports or fast moving subjects in stills mode the T7i is going to be the winner here.
—————————————————————
Of course the biggest new upgrade on the Canon SL2 is probably what makes it a real competitor to the Canon 800D. The SL2 got an upgrade to dual pixel autofocus which is actually found in much more expensive cameras such as the Canon 80D, 7D Mark ii, 5D Mark 4 and of course the T7i. With dual pixel autofocus, where ever you point your camera, it’ll smoothly and cinematically come into focus. It really is so easy. And if you pair that up with the touch screen, you can simply touch on the screen on whatever you want to be in focus and it will do all the focus work for you. Overall I've found that it works essentialy exactly the same on the SL2 as the 800D which is brilliant especially considering this is a cheaper camera. But either way both the T7i and 200D work brilliantly in video mode.
—————————————————————
Well both cameras are brilliant and are a big step up from tradiitonal budget cameras from Canon. For me the Canon 800D is still teh better camera, it's stills autofocus performance is brilliant. But on the other hand the Canon SL2 is an absolute winner and for most people will be the perfect beginners camera.
I'd recommend both of these cameras.
