This tutorial explains what is Wireless LAN Network concepts and how wireless network works. This tutorial continues the introduction of what is a computer wireless network and introduce about wireless LAN . This is the Computer Networking Tutorial 19 lecture.
This tutorial is a part of 20 Computer Networking video tutorial lecture in Computer Networking tutorial series. I explain what is a wireless LAN .

Learn what is a wireless LAN network, IEEE 802.11 standard, WEP, and ad hoc wireless Network in the Computer Networking Urdu Hindi lectures tutorial series by ifacter.com. Tutorial 19 introduces the viewers to networking and computer network IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g . Networking tutorials can be read at http://www.ifactner.com and downloaded in pdf. We have notes, pdf and list of books of Computer Networking and how does Internet work and Urdu. This tutorial introduces to the fundamentals wireless LAN in layman's term ifactner.com and can be used for info for computer networking certifications and technology operations. Ifactner introduces diagram and image of basic computer networks and the Mesh topology. I also discuss about ad hoc networks .

This computer networking tutorial introduces the viewers to internal working of wireless networks, wireless LANs and ad wireless networks.

Following are some of the main concepts covered in this tutorial:

Station (STA): A computer or device with a wireless network interface.

Access Point (AP): Device used to bridge the wireless-wired boundary, or to increase distance as a wireless packet repeater.
Provides network connectivitiy over wireless media
Act as a bridge b/w wireless and wired network.
Antennae

Channel: A radio frequency band, or infrared, used for shared communication. (2.4 GHz, Channel 1: 2.412GHz, Channel 6: 2.437GHz,Channel 11:2.462GHz)

SSID: Service Set identifier -- Name of wireless network
32 character unique name. SSID differentiates one WLAN from another, all access points and all devices attempting to connect to a specific WLAN must use the same SSID.

Ad Hoc Network: A temporary one made up of stations in mutual range. (Point to point or client to client. Only need wireless NIC)

Infrastructure network: One with one or more access points.

Standards -- 802.11 Wireless LAN:
802.11b (1997, operates on 2.4GHz ISM [industrial-scientific-medical] band] and supports date transfer rates of 1,2, 5.5 and 1 Mbps data rates),
80211a (operates on 5GHz frequency and supports data transfer rate upto 54 Mbps, incompatible with other industry standards)
802.11g (popular standadard, upto 54 Nbit/s, 2,4GHz band)
802.11n (2009,data rate from 54 to 600 Mbit/s, uses MiMo : multiple-input multiple output and use multiple antennas)
Range (Distance b/w Access Point and WLAN client) depends on structural hindrances and RF gain of the antenna at the Access Point.
Multiple APs may be used.
Hand-off

Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA)
Before every data transmission
• Sender sends a Request to Send (RTS) frame containing the length of the transmission
• Receiver respond with a Clear to /Send (CTS) frame
• Sender sends the data
• Receiver sends an ACK; now another sender can send data
When sender doesn't get a CTS back, it assumes collision

WLAN Security
WEP. The wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is part of the IEEE 802.11 standard and uses 64 or 128 but RC4 encryption.

WPA. Wi-Fi protected Access (WPA) -- introduced in 2003 as an interoperable wireless security specification.

WPA2. Established in September 2004 by the Wi-Fi alliance certified interoperable version of the full 802.11i specification ratified in June 2004.
